About This Course

Weave At Your Own Pace

The problem with a live class is that you are limited by time, but in this online experience, you’re going to do the equivalent of half a dozen live workshops indulging in a holistic look at basket weaving techniques as a springboard into fibre sculpture.

It may take you many weeks or even years to try out all the things Harriet will share with you in this course. Some of them may make you buzz with ideas more than others but that’s the way a great artist is made, slowly and with practice.

By fully engaging with the course content you will try out different processes and become adept at incorporating a variety of materials into 3D fibre sculpture or learn to incorporate weaving into your mixed media 2D pieces with your own unique expression.

You're Not Alone

There’s nothing worse than purchasing an online course only to be left in the dark.

That’s why we have created a worldwide community for learning where you’ll be able to ask questions, get feedback and connect directly with Harriet and fellow Form to Freedom students in a members-only online Facebook group.

Here you’ll receive invaluable support and a further two months of ongoing tuition after your initial enrollment including two live Q&A sessions with Harriet.

You are further supported by the team at Fibre Arts Take Two with our personal and attentive customer service that we have become known for!

Meet Harriet

Harriet Goodall has dedicated her entire adult life in service to the preservation of culture through her pursuit of weaving.

She has witnessed first hand indigenous weavers in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan, India, Australia and across southern Africa recognising the universality in coming together to dye and weave in villages and homes.

“I find the community that is created when weaving in a group is soul food and really beneficial to mental health - perhaps mimicking the ‘family model’ of making at home, so prevalent across many countries I have visited around the world.”

Harriet has run an independent art studio making sculpture, lighting and woven installations for private and commercial clients since 2007. She exhibits regularly and has passed on her passion for contemporary basket making techniques through popular workshops across Australia and around the world.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share my passion and knowledge of weaving with a global audience, embracing the challenge of creating an online community of international weavers to connect with and also learn from.”

9 Modules, 3 Bonuses & 12 Hours of Footage Including 8 Weeks Ongoing Tuition!

Harriet will guide you through the following modules sharing her stories and wisdom along the way.

  • Module 1

    Making an Amulet

We start by acknowledging First Nations people as the traditional knowledge keepers and Harriet will teach you to make cordage, an ancient basketry fundamental, which you can then use to create a personal amulet or talisman to bring you good luck while taking the class. This simple skill will keep your hands busy whilst you enjoy listening to Harriet guide you through other modules or during TV shows, car journeys, train and even plane trips.

  • Module 2

    Harvesting Plants for Weaving

The wonderful thing about basket making is that you don’t need a whole lot of expensive equipment to get started. Take a walk in nature with Harriet learning about the ethics of harvesting, collecting plant materials from your garden, bush or surrounding streetscape and how to prepare, dry and store those materials to make them suitable for weaving. A comprehensive guide to purchasing materials with a supplier list is also included.

  • Module 3

    Pods, Nests and Cocoons

Now you know what plant materials are suitable for weaving and how to prepare them, it’s time to get weaving! Finding inspiration from nature, using the popular technique of random weaving Harriet will walk you through two different sculptural forms. Teaching you the fundamental techniques of random or free-form weaving, so you can create woven sculptures that will hold their form in whatever shape you want!

  • Module 4

    In the Loop

Knotless netting or looping is used by contemporary artists all over the world to create a lace-like weaving and is one of Harriet’s favourite techniques to use in her fibre sculpture and lighting. In this module, Harriet will teach you three different looping stitches using waxed linen and hemp so you can get excited by creating contrast through both opacity and transparency that this technique provides.

  • Module 5

    Looping for Sculpture

If you’re looking to get more intentional and sculptural with your new looping skills then this module is for you! You’re now going to loosen up and have some fun with different looping techniques as Harriet shares how to use them in sculptural ways incorporating sticks and stones, vines and copper wire. You’ll learn various ways to create contrasting patterns and texture, cover objects completely and even mimic nature with random looping techniques.

  • Module 6

    Coiling with Plants and Clay

It’s time to start mixing your media. In this module, Harriet will show you how you can use the traditional basketry technique known as coiling to use purchased or leafy materials from the garden and mix them with ceramics - Think of it as a collaboration between coiling and clay! Starting with a traditional basket weavers buttonhole stitch taught to Harriet by Indigenous Australian women that she has worked with, before moving onto a spiral and V stitch. You’ll learn how to start and finish a basket and to coil onto the clay.

  • Module 7

    Open Paired Twining

It’s time to free yourself further working with soft and hard fibres enjoying the sculptural opportunities that open paired twining can provide. This is Harriet’s go-to technique that she uses for her bespoke lighting and one of her most popular live workshops. Developed on a trip to Vietnam, Harriet will walk you through the steps to create a beautiful open fish trap style basket before stepping you through the more traditional stake and strand technique starting from the bottom up using soft fibres. You’re going to love this module!

  • Module 8

    Dyeing Plant Fibres

So you have bought and harvested some materials and naturally, you're looking to get some variety in the colours you can work with. However, dye on plant fibres can be fugitive. In this module, Harriet will show you ways to enhance your weaving materials using powdered colour and the various natural dyes she has discovered work best for plant materials. She’ll even share her secret mordant discovery, that when combined with a rusty vinegaroon recipe will instantly transform the colour of your plant materials like magic!

“It is really through Harriet Goodall’s workshops that my love and ability as a weaver has grown and matured.

The beauty of the baskets we made, the connection to the history and tradition of weaving and the spirit of community that she creates and facilitates have all been essential ingredients to launching me on this deeply satisfying path of becoming a weaver.

I can highly recommend spending some time learning the craft of weaving from Harriet – her skill level is astounding, her soulful and enlivened teaching and her gift of shaping warm community are treasures for life.”

Clear & Helpful

Shona

"The instruction was clear and helpful, the choice of materials superb, the atmosphere was friendly and enthusiastic, you are obviously passionate about what you are doing and of course.

I am very keen to come to any of your other workshops so will be keeping a lookout on your website.

When I got home yesterday, I went for a walk and found some dried strappy leaves in the park. I came home and wound these through my basket in front of the TV last night. I also ordered raffia and emu feathers online as soon as I got home.

I think it’s safe to say I’m hooked! There is something about it I really love!"

Generously Sharing Knowledge

Alison

“It was such a pleasure to meet you, spend time with you, and to begin the exciting journey of learning to weave some of the native plants that I’ve worked with for so long in other capacities.

Thank you in turn for so generously sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm, and I’m very much looking forward to more workshops.”
